Alan is an illustrator, academic and writer. Since 1993 Alan has been head of the BA (Hons) Illustration programme at University College Falmouth, UK and has lectured throughout the United States. He was conferred a Professor in January 2009.
An authority on professional practice, research and communication, Alan writes regularly for national and international magazines and journals and is the author of ‘Illustration: A Theoretical and Contextual Perspective’ an undergraduate and postgraduate recommended textbook published worldwide.
A professional illustrator since 1973 Alan has worked nationally and internationally producing work for children’s books, editorials, CD’s, reference books, encyclopaedias and advertising. He has illustrated more than 30 complete books and has won several awards including Gold from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles and a Texas ‘Bluebonnet’ for children’s books.
Alan has exhibited in London, Arizona, Denver, at the Museum of American Illustration and has work in New York State Museum’s permanent collection where he has twice been recipient of the internationally acclaimed ‘Focus on Nature’ Purchase Prize award. His research collaborations, notably with Cambridge University resulted in consultancy for Japanese State Television. Further work presents the creation and interpretation of new knowledge related to science.
Alan is a member of the Society of Illustrators, New York and has a Master of Philosophy Higher Degree from the Royal College of Art, London. |
