American Artists, a.k.a. AA Reps proudly represents: Bot Roda

Bot Roda is a Lancaster, PA born freelance illustrator and cartoonist working out of a studio in his home in Lancaster, PA which he shares with his wife, Joanne.

A 1970 graduate of Lancaster Catholic, Roda enlisted in the Navy right after high school and served 4 years on 3 different ships, making a world cruise on the destroyer USS Basilone and seeing action on the gunline off North Vietnam for 2 months. After the Navy he attended the York Academy of Arts on the GI Bill and graduated in 1978. He worked at a Baltimore package design studio for a year before being hired by Godfrey Advertising as an art director/illustrator and for the next 15 years, provided Godfrey’s clients with original and stylized humorous illustrations and animations for use in the clients’ ads and marketing materials, while at the same time polishing his skills and developing the many styles he’s become known for. Some of this work went on to garner industry recognition through a national Cleo award nomination and several ADDY awards from the Central PA Association of Advertising Agencies. He was also a finalist in the New York Society of Illustrators national juried humor show in 1988. In 1994, Roda decided to pursue his dream of being self-employed and parted amiably with his friends at Godfrey.

Roda’s assignments since then have been plentiful and diverse. They originate from sources that include corporations, ad agencies, design studios, web designers, book and magazine publishers, theme parks, major league sports teams, and businesses large and small. Clients he’s completed assignments for include the American Red Cross; AT&T; Delaware Solid Waste Authority; Coldwell Banker; Conrail; GTE; Independence Blue Cross/Pa Blue Shield; Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins; National Safety Council, Pepsi; Rohm & Haas; Smith Kline Beecham; Times Mirror Magazines; UGI Corporation; University of Pennsylvania; Wolter Kluwer Health; Wyeth-Aherst Labs and Zerox.

From 1990 through 1997 Roda illustrated media guide and program covers for the following professional sports teams: New York Yankees; Baltimore Orioles; Atlanta Braves; Boston Celtics; Utah Jazz; Phoenix Suns; Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia Flyers.

When not at his drawing table or working on his Apple Power Mac computer Roda’s hobbies include reading military history and current events, playing ice hockey twice a week as a goaltender, computers and playing online computer games. His former hobby as a Civil War re-enactor led him to be hired as a storyboard artist in 1992 by Ron Maxwell, the director for the Turner Pictures feature film “Gettysburg”, and Maxwell utilized Roda’s talents again for storyboards for his 2001 prequel “Gods & Generals” which was released February 2003. Roda will do the storyboards for the sequel “Last Full Measure” in the Civil War trilogy when Maxwell completes the screenplay. He recently completed the storyboards for a 30 minute Hollywood style film on Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg and produced by Greystone TV in Los Angeles called “Fields of Freedom”. Greystone TV will soon start pre-production on a film about the life of George Washington to be shown at Mt.Vernon’s new interactive museum and theater and Roda has been hired to do the storyboards for the production.
